The Next Generation Enterprise Network (NGEN) contract, which the Navy values at up to $4.5 billion over five years, is intended to be the next evolution of the existing Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI).

The Senate unanimously approved a bill Tuesday expanding protections for federal whistleblowers. The Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act, which was authored and introduced by Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), the chairman of a Senate subcommittee on the federal workforce, updates a 1989 law protecting government whistleblowers.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta issued a firm rebuke Thursday after the House Armed Services Committee approved a defense authorization bill that revitalized several programs worth hundreds of millions of dollars that the Pentagon wants to cancel. Panetta warned lawmakers that tinkering with DoD’s budget plan is a recipe for stalemate with the Senate and will have negative consequences for national security. <
