DoD cuts at center of budget battle

Organizers of a new, conservative initiative are issuing a fact sheet Wednesday that argues against any cuts in defense spending, Politico reports.

Get ready for the battle of the budget with the Defense Department budget on the front lines of that battle.

Three conservative think tanks are arguing that the defense budget should not be cut. The report, titled “Defending Defense,” was scheduled to be released Wednesday by the American Enterprise Institute, Heritage and the Foreign Policy Institute.

In a op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, leaders argue that defense spending has increased at a much lower rate than domestic spending in recent years and is not the cause of federal deficits.

Politico reports that a progressive group, the Sustainable Defense Task Force, is concerned that such lobbying for more defense spending, and not less, will do nothing to improve the nation’s bulging deficit.

The group published a report in June, arguing that both Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, are serious about saving defense dollars.
