January 6, 2011 — Federal Security Spotlight this week talks to Alan Duncan, assistant IG for the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). He specializes in security and IT issues.

A recent report on the main challenges of the IRS in 2011 puts cybersecurity at the top of the list. In this interview, Duncan breaks down the challenges within that report.

Ongoing modernization of IRS systems causes some cybersecurity issues even as it fixes others. Another source is congressional tardiness in enacting tax law changes. That forces fire-drill development efforts to make systems comply with the new laws, opening the potential for cyber issues to creep in.
