Tougher cybersecurity regulations could be the final step for Stage 2 of the HITECH Act, according to GovInfoSecurity.

The HITECH Act aims to create national standards for the implementation of electronic health records.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services want hospitals to prove their EHRs are encrypted and secure. The Office of Management and Budget is reviewing the proposal but it might take weeks or months before it’s published in the Federal Register.

Officials had hoped to release a final version of the Stage 2 rules by the end of the summer.
