It began with the electric starter, then came fluid drive and cruise control. Now the future is looking like cars that drive themselves. Carmakers and some Internet companies are trying to turn this fantasy into reality, and so is the Transportation Department. Secretary Anthony Fox launched a $40 million challenge to find a city willing to turn its roads into a laboratory for autonomous cars.
