From Our Reporters:

  • Furloughs are out across government, but one agency wanted to make extra sure its employees received their notices. The Internal Revenue Service sent some of its employees overnight letters to make sure they received their furloughs within the time allotted by law. Federal News Radio Senior Correspondent Mike Causey talked to Francis about the extra lengths the agency went to. Listen to the interview or read Mike’s report.
  • Agencies have a culture of performance more today than ever before. So says Shelley Metzenbaum, who left her role Friday as the associate director for personnel and performance at the Office of Management and Budget. It has been Metzenbaum’s job to be the Obama administration’s activist for performance management. Metzenbaum looked back on her four-year tenure with Executive Editor Jason Miller. Listen to the interview and read Jason’s report.
  • Congress has made its feelings pretty clear on the subject of another round of military base closures and realignments. Lawmakers included an explicit prohibition on another BRAC round in this year’s Defense Authorization bill. But DoD leaders remain insistent that since the military’s shrinking, bases need to shrink too. Read DoD Reporter Jared Serbu’s latest report.
