A new leader at the top of the Office of Governmentwide Policy at the General Services Administration has some industry insiders worried about lines of communication. Anne Rung, the agency’s Chief Acquisition Officer, will take over for Kathleen Turco. Keeping those communications lines open was a big priority for Dan Gordon, the former administrator at the Office of Federal Procurement Policy. He’s now associate dean for government procurement law at the George Washington University Law School, and he joins In Depth to discuss the steps agencies and vendors should take to keep the lines of communication open.

The federal government isn’t very popular right now, but the idea of bonuses for senior government officials seems to be really unpopular right now. Tom Shoop, editor-in-chief of Government Executive, defended the practice of keeping Senior Executive Service bonuses in a column at GovExec and received a lot of feedback.
The Pentagon is working on the rules and definitions around cyber war. But the concepts behind those rules and definitions aren’t new. Richard Stiennon, chief research analyst at IT Harvest, wrote a book called “Surviving Cyber War” in 2010. He joins In Depth to discuss what’s different about cyber war now.
Your agency puts out lots of data. The administration is trying to make that more accessible and usable for citizens, but it will take more work than just hanging the information on a website and waiting for people to discover it. Relmond Van Daniker, executive director of the Association of Government Accountants, joins In Depth to discuss some of the resources available to agencies.
Dan Tangherlini would be the eighth administrator of the General Services Administration in the last eight years if the Senate confirms him. Members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said during his confirmation hearing he would bring stability to the agency that has been sorely missing. Fixing one claims backlog at the Department of Veterans Affairs may be holding up the fix for another backlog. The agency is taking several steps to dig out of a large backlog of disability claims, including mandatory overtime for its employees and a new strategy to tackle the oldest claims first. But VA’s congressional overseers say it looks like more attention to new claims is forcing another critical part of the department’s workload to take a backseat. Federal News Radio’s Jared Serbu has the details.
