On today’s In Depth, we take a look at money–how the Homeland Security Department is spending yours, and how you can keep more of your money for retirement. We also learn more about Federal contractor MPRI, and the work they’re doing for their biggest Federal customers. And collaboration is becoming one of the biggest buzzwords in the public sector, but there are things you should know about it before you jump in head first.
Oversight, Over and Over
The House Homeland Security Committee‘s subcommittee on Management, Investigations, and Oversight took a look at the procurement process at DHS yesterday. The committee called the hearing “Waste, Abuse and Mismanagement: Calculating the Cost of DHS Failed Contracts” Our coverage of the hearing starts with a question from subcommittee chairman Chris Carney. He asked DHS’s deputy Chief Procurement Officer Richard Gunderson about numbers in the procurement force.

He’s Jealous Of Your Thrift Savings Plan
Financial experts of all stripes have told FederalNewsRadio that they’d love to get into the Thrift Savings Plan. But Dan Solin has gone one step further–he’s expressed his love for the TSP publicly, to anyone who will read his new book, The Smartest 401(k) Book You’ll Ever Read. We talked about why he loves the TSP, what’s wrong with private-sector retirement plans, and why you shouldn’t take advice from the “big guys” in the financial services industry (hint: some of them are dead or dying).
All Over The World
MPRI‘s Rick Kiernan joined me in the “Contractor Spotlight” to talk about the work they do for their biggest customers in the Federal government. He also told me why he thinks the company has a higher-than-normal rate of success in rebidding contracts.
Collaboration Shmollaboration
Collaboration is one of the buzz words people are hearing all over the federal government. And it’s also being talked about in government offices all around the world. One of the sources of tension in collaboration is the generational gap…younger workers expect to use collaboration tools, while some leaders aren’t convinced of their relevance. Anthony Williams is an expert on collaboration in the public sector, and the co-author of “Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything.” He gave Chris Dorobek and me some solutions for easing those tensions; but he started with a primer on collaboration for the uninitiated.
