When he started at the State Department, there were typewriters. Now, the lines of communication depend on technology and Van Derhoff says it is a change that should be welcomed, not feared. Despite natural, and necessary, concerns about security he thinks there is a lot more capability out there than we realize, for example technology that will make the screen of your PDA go blank if you leave it in another room. He also thinks that some of the problems agencies have now, with some feds more reluctant than others to embrace technology, may pass since the younger generations are becoming accustomed to constantly incorporating new technology at a rapid pace.
