This photo gallery shows how U.S. Navy personnel and their families are celebrating the holiday season at home and abroad.
Capt. Timothy Kuehhas, commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, and his family finish painting the eyes of a traditional Japanese Daruma doll on Dec. 17, 2015, in the ship’s in-port cabin after pulling in to the ship’s new homeport of Norfolk, Virginia, following an eight-month deployment. A Daruma doll is traditionally given as a gift and the recipient paints one of the eyes upon setting a goal. By painting the second eye, Kuehhas has demonstrated that Washington completed its goal of a safe and successful deployment. The Daruma will be returned to Japan where it will be ceremoniously burned at an appropriate shrine.
