The Partnership for Public Service recently announced the finalists for the 2016 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals.
Dr. Burke Healey led the emergency response last year to an avian influenza outbreak that threatened the U.S. poultry industry by infecting flocks across 15 states. Kevin Shea, administrator of the USDA’s inspection service, called it the largest animal disease in U.S. history.
“Burke Healey and his team prevented that and did so in a way that was quick, efficient and allowed us to maintain the trust of our state agencies, the poultry industry and our international partners,” Shea said.
