For yet another month, the Office of Personnel Management remains within sight of its retirement claims goal, but has yet to hit the target in 2016.
OPM’s retirement backlog rose to 15,562 claims in July — a 15 percent increase from last month’s inventory. The agency remains close to its “steady state” line of 13,000 claims, but has yet to achieve that goal this calendar year.
July’s numbers continue the data trend indicating that OPM has gotten a handle on its inventory backlog, which surged in January, typically the month that most federal employees file for retirement.
OPM received 9,238 new claims in July — a 55 percent increase from what it had received in June.
In its year-to-date numbers, OPM reported that it processed 79 percent of its claims in 60 days or less.
For cases processed under 60 days, OPM said the average number of days it took to process a case was 38. For cases processed in more than 60 days, the average number of days it took to process a case was 110.
