NFL prospect denies rape report made to police; no charges

An attorney for former Ohio State football star Gareon Conley says the player denies an accusation made in a police report that he sexually assaulted a woman

CLEVELAND (AP) — An attorney for former Ohio State football star Gareon Conley says the player denies an accusation made in a police report that he sexually assaulted a woman. No charges have been filed.

Spokeswoman Kathleen Caffrey of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office says the April 9 encounter is still being investigated by police.

A Cleveland police report released Tuesday says the 23-year-old woman told officers that Conley sexually assaulted her in the bathroom of a hotel room.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Ciaccia says investigators are making arrangements to interview Conley, one of the top defensive prospects in the upcoming NFL draft.

Conley’s attorney, Kevin Spellacy, told Cleveland.com that the accusations are “ridiculous and ludicrous.” He says the woman who made the claims is “an opportunist.” He did not immediately return messages left by The Associated Press.

Conley started at cornerback for Ohio State for two years and was a captain for the team last season. The 21-year-old player was expected to be chosen in the first round of the NFL draft that begins Thursday.

Spellacy told Cleveland.com that he made arrangements with police for Conley to be questioned after the draft. Spellacy said his client was with three other people that night and didn’t commit a crime.

The police report says the woman was taken to the hospital for an examination. Ciaccia says the woman was interviewed on scene and by detectives.

Spellacy said the woman called police because she got angry when Conley kicked her out of the room.

A man who was asleep in the room when police arrived told officers no assault occurred, saying he was in the room the entire time and saw Conley and the woman on the bed before she was kicked out, according to the police report.
