Lawmakers sign commitment to cybersecurity

Letter includes vision for future bill.

Cybersecurity Update – Tune in weekdays at 30 minutes past the hour for the latest cybersecurity news on The Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris (6-10 a.m.) and DorobekInsider with Chris Dorobek (3-5 p.m.). have taken to pen and paper to signal their commitment to strengthen cybersecurity. In a letter to the president, a group of Senators says the rapid growth of communications and information systems is outpacing security measures, leaving almost every segment of society at risk. In order to combat the growing risk, Congress is working to develop comprehensive legislation that will balance government’s need for adequate regulatory power while still protecting the civil liberties and individual privacy of citizens. Their vision includes coordination across departments and the private sector, broad situational awareness and fast, effective response strategies.

It appears that the effort to pass a cyber-security bill is going to get a bit more tough then expected. Late last month, officials from Cisco, IBM and Oracle sent a letter to the main sponsors of the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, S. 3480 – Senators Joe Lieberman (DI-Conn.) Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Tom Carper (D-Del.). The letter raised concerns about some provisions of the bill, which you can read here, which prompted the senators to issue a rather strong reply.
