The Food and Drug Administration has named Eric Perakslis as its new chief information officer and chief scientist for informatics.

Perakslis comes to FDA after spending 13 years as the senior vice president and CIO of research and development IT and head of informatics for the corporate office of science and technology for Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical.

“In addition to IT expertise, Eric brings a deep knowledge of the drug discovery and development processes for large and small molecule therapeutics,” wrote FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg in an email to the staff obtained by Federal News Radio

Perakslis takes over for acting CIO Stephen Veneruso, who has been in the job since January when Lori Davis left to work for industry.

Bio-IT World first reported FDA naming Perakslis as its new CIO.

Perakslis has some government experience, beginning his career with the Army Corps of Engineers before moving to the private sector.

He has a Ph.D. in chemical and biochemical engineering and a B.S. and a M.S. in chemical engineering.
