  • Members of the Commission on Wartime Contracting have arrived in Afghanistan to look for waste in U-S construction contracts. The week-long visit will focus on military, diplomatic and reconstruction projects. Included on the list are bases, power plants and training centers for Afghan security forces. The commission will also look into alleged human-rights abuses by contractors.
  • The Air Force Surgeon General has issued a memo warning all Airmen about electronic cigarettes. So-called ‘e-cigs’ are battery operated devices that look like cigarettes. The e-cig contains a cartridge filled with nicotine. The idea is to reduce the level of nicotine gradually, to help the smoker quit the habit. But Lt. General (Doctor) Charles Green’s warning says that the Food and Drug Administration has tested the e-cigs, and found chemicals that cause cancer, and one chemical used in antifreeze. The e-cigs do not carry warnings like conventional cigarettes. But, because of their nature, appearance, and safety concerns, they’re considered in the same category as tobacco products by the Air Force.
  • The Defense Logistics Agency is conducting a conference in Columbus, Ohio. A big part of that conference focuses on working with small businesses. Peg Meehan, director of DLA’s small business program, joins the Federal Drive at 7:40 with more details.
