IBM has won a contract to create a machine that can hear and speak in many languages. The $6.5 million contract came from the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency.
DARPA describes system as capable of translating multiple foreign languages. It will be able to extract information from the translated material and enable bilingual communication using speech or text. DARPA said the covers two projects: One is called Genre-Independent Translation and Information Retrieval System. The other is called Human to Human Dialogue System.
IBM has until the end of September 2016 to finish the work.
