The Office of Personnel Management is changing healthcare rules for federal employees with same-sex domestic partners.

At the same it announced an average increase of 3.8 percent in federal health premiums, OPM also announced additional plans — outside of the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program — that would offer affinity benefits for same-sex domestic partners.

But domestic partners that want to be added to the FEHBP should expect to dig deep into their pockets if they want to join the plan.

That’s because the government will not chip in the more than 70 percent it usually pays in premium costs and same-sex partners will have to pay the full cost of the premiums.

Ed Zurndorfer, a registered employee benefits, joined the Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris to discuss the new plans.
