Rear Adm. Michael Franken is taking over as the Navy’s lead for energy efficiency.

Franken has been assigned as the new director of the Energy and Environmental Readiness Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

He replaces Rear Adm. Philip Cullom.

Franken is currently serving as commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa.

Franken will be responsible for the Navy’s efforts to reduce energy costs and increase the use of alternative fuels such as bio-diesel. In August, the Navy issued an RFP to buy $500 million worth of alternative fuels.
