Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. It’s the 99th anniversary of a small Coast Guard unit that was created to prevent future ship disasters in the rough north Atlantic Ocean. The International Ice Patrol maps out icebergs for traveling vessels.
The ice patrol is a Coast Guard unit under a collaboration with the North American Ice Service, including the Canadian Ice Service and the U.S. National Ice Center.
Coast Guard Senior Chief John Luzader told The Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Emily Kopp about the biggest challenges the unit faces.
