The long-held dream of power from nuclear fusion is a step closer to reality. For a split second, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory created a tiny star that gave off more energy than it took in. Physicist Omar Hurricane is the lead author of the study. He says scientists have tried to achieve fusion since the 1950s, but his team took a different path.

For as long as the government has been giving disability payments, it’s been plagued by fraudsters. Recently a ring of cheaters was arrested in New York. So far, more than 100 people have been charged with grand larceny and other crimes, including retired police officers and firefighters. They had been filing phony disability applications and training others how to do so for decades.

Alan Shark is president of the Public Technology Institute. He testified last week before a House Ways and Means subcommittee. He offers his ideas for fighting fraud.
