5. How will OPM make government jobs more desirable?
The easiest, simplest and most accurate hiring process in the world won’t matter if no one wants the jobs. The federal workforce is graying. Younger feds tend to stay just a few years.
One reason is the pay. (See question 3.) The General Schedule is itself old enough to retire. When it was designed in 1947, the government had many more clerical employees than it does now. Two people who share the same grade and step level make the same amount of money, regardless of their positions or professions.
Past OPM directors have stayed largely silent on the issue. But Cobert needs to take a stand, said Stier.
“The system is not aligned to the world of today or tomorrow and needs significant changes,” he said.
