Archivist to step down

Allen Weinstein, archivist of the United States, will step down effective Dec. 19.

The National Archives and Records Administration announced today that Weinstein submitted his resignation Dec. 7 because of health concerns. Weinstein has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Deputy Archivist Adrienne Thomas will serve as acting archivist until a new archivist is appointed.

Congress confirmed Weinstein in February 2005.

Under his leadership, NARA has successfully deployed two National Archives Electronic Records Archives systems, including phase two Dec. 6, which would enable the transfer and storage of President Bush’s records.

He also led NARA’s effort to establish the National Declassification Initiative to create a more responsive and reliable executive branch declassification program.

Additionally, he established the effort to eliminate more than 20 percent of a million cubic square feet of unprocessed records and developed three partnerships with non-governmental organizations to digitize and index major portions of National Archives holdings and make them available to the public at minimal cost to the taxpayer.
