The Defense Department has observed “Red Ribbon Week” every year since 1990, and this year’s observance continues through Oct. 31st.

Defense.gov reports that readiness is the main reason for concern about any type of drug use by military members. The campaign honors Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, an agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency and a former Marine, who was kidnapped and murdered by drug traffickers in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1985.
