The Postal Service is considering expanding its mail delivery business into the digital realm. A new white paper from USPS’s inspector general explores the idea of what it calls the eMailbox. Customers could choose what mail they want to receive the old fashioned way, or in a new, secure electronic format, coupled with a new data storage service the IG calls eLockbox. The Postal Service explored a similar idea in the late 1990s, but eventually abandoned the concept because it felt the market wasn’t yet mature enough.
