The Senate Budget Committee examined Tuesday the fiscal-year 2013 budget request for the Defense Department.
Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), in his opening remarks, said providing funding for national security is the “single most important responsibility” of lawmakers and the government.
“But given the long-term fiscal crises that we confront, every area of the budget has to come under scrutiny,” Conrad added. “Every area has to come under scrutiny. And I believe we’re going to have to find more savings in the core defense budget.”
