As Congress starts going through the defense budget, lawmakers are asking defense experts for advice. One of them is Dr. James Carafano, director of the Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies at the Heritage Foundation.
He testified before the Senate Budget Committee last week. Carafano, who joined In Depth with Francis Rose, told lawmakers on the Senate Budget Committee he believed the 2013 budget request, coupled with the cuts under sequestration, “would reduce the capabilities of the armed forces to the point that they could no longer protect U.S. vital interests and keep U.S. security commitments around the world.”
Carafano discussed his overall take on where Congress is with the budget as well as why he believes “the capabilities and readiness posture that can be achieved under the President’s vision fall far short of what is adequate.”
