Today’s guest is Aaron Powell, partner and chief strategy officer for Flexion. It is always good to get a perspective on a federal information technology problem from a company that is outside the beltway. Although Wisconsin is not geographically distant, it certainly is different from Washington DC culturally.
Powell’s company has been around since 1995 but has experienced rapid growth since 2008. They went from 60 employees to 220. This growth was in the street-fighting world of commercial software development. Flexion has mastered the art of applying some of the nuanced concepts of Lean software development to a wide range of commercial problems.
Powell is betting this skill set can be adapted to the federal government. His company is one of the select few who have been chosen to work with the new 18F project from the GSA. Essentially, this is an initiative where technical experts act as floating experts to a wide range of agencies. These teams can be formed and re-formed as need requires. The extreme flexibility of this system needs guidance from outside sources who have successfully implemented it in the past – where Flexion fits.
