As more and more agencies embrace digital technology, many have discovered that social media is a useful tool to educate the public on their particular missions. Here are 11 Instagram accounts that show off a small portion of the federal government’s work.

1. Interior Department

Last week’s #summer solstice marked the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, but Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve in #Alaska hasn’t noticed much change. The last time the sun set in Bettles was on June 2, when it dipped below the horizon for a little over 20 minutes. The next time it sets will be on July 10, when it will once again drop below the horizon briefly before rising again. No wonder it’s called the land of the midnight sun. 2. Smithsonian’s National Zoo

Six years ago, Bornean orangutans Batang and Kyle received a breeding recommendation from the Species Survival Plan. Why did we wait? Batang needed a bit more time to mature socially and show animal care staff she was ready for primate parenthood! In 2014, she came off of birth control, and keepers tracked Batang’s ovulation cycle by monitoring her urine.
