The Census Bureau is the only federal agency with a primary function — the decennial census — mandated by the U.S. Constitution.

The Census Bureau also collects and analyzes all sorts of useful information about almost every aspect of life in the United States.

Over the last 30 years, the Bureau has become more dependent on information technology.

Census CITSO Tim Ruland oversees the IT security effort, and talks about what he looks for in IT security professionals. He also discusses how his department has its own networking and mentoring program for younger IT staff members.
