#3 2014 budget likely to be delayed

The Obama administration’s release of its fiscal 2014 budget request likely will be delayed well past its early February due date.”I fully expect it to be late,” said Thad Juszczak, a former federal budget officer, who predicts the delay will likely run into March. Another former federal official, who asked not to be named because he was citing sources within the government, confirmed that agencies are anticipating a March submission date.

#2 Agencies list 376 reports as unnecessary

Agencies have singled out 376 legally required reports that could be eliminated, published less often or consolidated with others. The list was posted this week on performance.gov, an Office of Management and Budget website, in response to a provision in the 2010 Government Performance and Results Modernization Act that aims to get rid of unneeded agency reporting.

President Obama on Monday nominated former Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel as defense secretary and counterterrorism adviser John O. Brennan as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Appearing with the two men in the East Room of the White House, Obama called Hagel “the leader that our troops deserve” and a “champion of our troops and our veterans and our military families.” He said Hagel, a former Army sergeant, would be the first person of enlisted rank and the first Vietnam War veteran to head the Defense Department.
