A redesign of the Senior Executive Service is overdue, according to a lot of experts that study the federal workforce. Bruce Barkley , who teaches public administration and program management at the Keller Graduate School of Management in Atlanta, Ga., is the author of a new report on the SES.
Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 55. In the government community, over 50,000 cataract surgeries are performed each year at Veterans Affairs health facilities alone. However, doctors currently are unable to track the outcomes of such surgeries. Dr. David Vollman, an ophthalmologist with the St. Louis VA Medical Center, is trying to change that. He started a pilot program that is leading to the creation of a national VA database of cataract surgeries. Vollman has been nominated for a Service to America Medal for his work. Francis spoke to him about what he hopes his work will accomplish.
