  • Next year, you’ll have two agencies to go to for help with cybersecurity excercises. But, how have they been cooperating with each other? The relationship between the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security may have been difficult to sort out in the past. But, they have been working toward improving communication with each other, and cybersecurity is one area where that seems to be the case. Nicole Dean is the deputy director of the National Cybersecurity Division at the Department of Homeland Security. She’s Tom Temin’s guest tomorrow on Federal Security Spotlight. You can hear the full show here tomorrow.
  • The Defense Department’s Cyber Command is only two months old. The Cyber Command is tasked with coordinating the Defense Department’s cybersecurity message and efforts. What’s on the young command’s to-do list? Wes Andrues is the Plans and Readiness Division Chief for the U.S. Army Global Network Operations Center and has offered some suggestions. Six steps that the CyberCommand can take to be effective:
    • Establish priorities
    • Come to a consensus
    • Resolve some of the classic and long standing tensions
    • Define Cyber Forces
    • Create new rules of engagement
    • Avoid escalation of hostilities

That’s no small task. In fact, the National Defense University Press reports, many DoD leaders are already questioning if the Command should be more segmented. And they’re lobbying for a Joint Logistics Command that would consume the gamut of logistics missions that currently straddle USTRANSCOM, the Defense Logistics Agency, and the service logistics entities. But proponents hope that if it’s successful the Cyber Command could make a tangible impact on cyberspace.
