President Obama today announced his intention to nominate Gene Dodaro to be the next Comptroller General of the United States.

Dodaro has been the acting Comptroller General since March 2008 when former head of the Government Accountability Office David Walker resigned. Walker now is the president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

Dodaro has been with GAO for 37 years, previously serving as its chief operating officer, and assistant comptroller general for GAO’s largest unit, the Accounting and Information Management Division. The Senate will have to confirm Dodaro.

Dodaro worked closely with the Congress and several administrations on major management reform initiatives, including the 1994 Government Management Reform Act, which expanded the Chief Financial Officers Act; the revised 1995 Paperwork Reduction Act and the Clinger-Cohen Act of 1996, which require agencies to implement modern management practices for information technology management; and the 1996 refinements to the Single Audit Act, which outlines requirements for audits of federal assistance to state and local governments.

Several other names have been floated around, including Congressman Todd Platts (R-Pa.). Others potential nominees included Linda Bilmes at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, former Assistant Comptroller Ira Goldstein and Stuart Bowen, the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, according to the IBM Business of Government blog.
