In floor comments today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) indicated a willingness to compromise with Republicans on a spending bill.
“We accept the lessons of yesterday’s vote,” Reid said in floor comments, The Hill reports. “We know we’ll have to make a sacrifice to reach consensus, and we are willing to do that.”
Democrats and Republicans are divided on how deeply to make cuts for the remaining seven months of the 2011 fiscal year budget. On Wednesday, the Senate voted down both the GOP and Democratic versions of a bill that were $50 billion apart on how much spending should be cut. However, the Republican bill lost by less votes.
Congress must pass a spending bill before the March 18 expiration of the current short-term budget.
The Hill quoted Reid saying, “It’s time to get down to business.”
