President Obama will veto a one-week stopgap funding bill that cleared the House today and would make appropriations for the Defense Department for the remaining six months in this budget year.

However, the bill would cut $12 billion in spending.

H.R.1363 would allow DoD to pay troops and free up money for canceled weapon programs, said Lt. Gen. Edgar Stanton, military deputy for budget in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, as reported by Defense News.

“This bill is a distraction from the real work that would bring us closer to a responsible compromise for funding the remainder of fiscal year 2011 and avert a disruptive federal government shutdown that would put the nation’s economic recovery in jeopardy,” according to a statement from the Obama administration.
