Five decades linking feds and charities

For the first time the Combined Federal Campaign will try to generate excitement and participation among that newest class of feds -- teleworkers. Federal News...

Mike Causey is on vacation this week. While he’s gone, he asked some guest columnists to fill in. Enjoy!

The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) celebrates its 54th anniversary this year, and federal workers can rightfully be proud of the more than $7 billion they have donated to charity since 1961.  In the D.C. Metro area, the 2014 CFC raised nearly $50 million.

I’ve been privileged to serve on the Local Federal Coordinating Committee (LFCC) for several years. The CFC continues to evolve, improving the technology available for giving and responding to the diverse, urgent needs of our community. For example, the campaign is, first and foremost, an efficient and effective fundraising mechanism for tens of thousands of charities, yet the campaign also stresses the importance of voluntarism so that federal workers can impact their community by donating their time as well as their money. Connecting federal employees with nonprofit organizations in tangible ways is an essential component of the CFC.

Planning is already underway for this year’s campaign, which will continue its longstanding tradition of fun-filled events, generous federal employees, and exciting promotions.

There are more than 20,000 participating charities in this year’s Combined Federal Campaign, all of which have been vetted and approved by the Office of Personnel Management and LFCC.

In response to the growing number of teleworking and hoteling employees, for the first time the campaign will train loaned executives and campaign managers on how best to generate excitement and participation among workers who telework or hotel.

This year’s campaign begins Sept. 1 and ends Dec. 15. Campaign managers from key federal agencies will meet with CFC staff starting next month in July to prepare for the fall campaign, and loaned executives begin their assignment with the campaign in August. On Sept. 3, campaign leadership training will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building.

I am proud to serve on the Local Federal Coordinating Committee with 20 other senior federal employees as we do our work in preserving, growing and making CFC a continuing vital program for charities and federal employees.
