Countdown to shutdown:

Les Misérables … not so much

Federal workers are 1 percentage point happier this year than they were in 2014. Senior Correspondent Mike Causey says this is a giant leap for mankind, sort of.

Federal workers are a miserable lot. And they’ve got the surveys, reports, presidential commissions and blue ribbon panels to prove how bad things are. But while many people are — and have long been unhappy or nervous in the civil service — things are a tad bit better this year: 1 percent better, to be precise, than this time last year.

Hey, it’s a start.

Washington is a town that cranks out reports, surveys and position papers like Iowa and Illinois produces corn. Or California nuts. Almonds mostly. But other kinds’ as well.

At any given time, 24/7, some federal agency, congressional office, lobbyist or think tank is either preparing, releasing or denouncing a report about any number of subjects: Global warming, the economy, air quality, el Niño threats to the world’s coral reefs or baby carriages.

Sometimes, some of the reports and studies coming from the Washington production line are about government workers. The conclusions are usually bad. Bad for government workers. For instance:

There’s this brand-new-hot-off-the-presses study by the Cato Institute. So, you know where this is going. Cato is not a big fan of big government. The new study says, with much more backup and documentation, that feds are so overpaid they have no right to complain. which says feds are so overpaid they have no right to complain about, well, anything.

Meantime, keep on complaining. Or not. It’s what we do best, here in D.C.
