WASHINGTON (AP) – Republicans plan to send President Barack Obama a message just a few hours before his State of the Union speech Tuesday.
The House GOP has scheduled a vote telling budget committee chair Paul Ryan to pare back non-security spending for the second half of the current fiscal year to 2008 levels.
House Majority leader Eric Cantor says cuts could go even deeper than that. He says, “We are about trying to find savings everywhere we can.”
The vote before Obama’s address will force lawmakers to show where they stand on spending cuts.
Republicans promised during the campaign to reduce spending this year by $100 billion, but the expectation is that it’ll be than half that.
