The Pentagon has confirmed that its acting chief information officer will now serve as the permanent DoD CIO.

Defense Department chief information officer Terry Halvorsen
Terry Halvorsen, a former Navy CIO, assumed the role of permanent CIO on Sunday, according to Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. Valerie Henderson. Halvorsen took over in May 2014 for Teri Takai, who served in the position for more than three years.

As acting CIO, Halvorsen headed up the Pentagon’s top tech priorities, including cloud computing and cybersecurity, and has served as the secretary of Defense’s principal advisor on information management, information technology and information assurance.

In his testimony before the House Armed Services Committee last month, Halvorsen warned Congress about the delays DoD would face with its cybersecurity modernization if nothing is done about sequestration caps scheduled to return in fiscal 2016.

“Sequestration will delay our modernization, and delaying the modernization comes along with a lot of other things. We will be more vulnerable; we won’t support the warfighters. They will be at risk,” Halvorsen said.

Before his time as Navy CIO, Halvorsen had served as the deputy commander of Navy Cyber Forces and as the deputy commander of the Naval Network Warfare Command.
