Email scammers are targeting military service members, retirees and Defense Department civilian personnel.
The Defense Finance and Accounting Service said the emails appear to come from its office. The “spoofs” say that people who are receiving disability compensation from Veterans Affairs may be able to obtain more money from the Internal Revenue Service.
They ask recipients to mail copies of their VA award letters, income tax returns and other documents to a retired colonel in Florida.
DFAS said: Don’t do it. You would be giving a complete stranger a significant amount of personal information and could lose a lot of money.
