  • The Homeland Security Department’s Science and Technology Directorate chose 10 startup companies to participate in its research program for wearable technology. The EMERGE 2016: Wearable Technology program is for startups and other partner companies to share research to create wearable technology specifically tailored for first responders.   • City governments and law enforcement agencies received some money from the Justice Department to help them ease tensions caused by traumatic community events. DoJ’s Office for Victims of Crime awarded $7 million to help communities respond to high profile violence, including shootings that involve law enforcement officers. It’s part of the Office’s Vision 21 Initiative. (Department of Justice)
  • NASA wants your ideas for building houses for future space explorers. It’s offering a prize of $1.1 million for its 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge. In Phase 2 of the competition, it wants citizen inventors to use readily available and recyclable materials for the raw material to print habitats. Teams have until Jan. 31, 2017 to sign up. (NASA)
