February 10, 2015 — Technology is changing so fast that it is difficult for everyone to keep up. Probably the best example is the proliferation of web services available from Amazon.
In an attempt to alleviate at least some of the confusion, we have brought in Mark Ryland, chief solutions architect, Amazon Web Services.
AWS is popular in the commercial world because it can save large organizations money if they need to use a web service on a temporary basis. For example, what if a large organization (perhaps a federal agency) needs to set up a data warehouse once a year or for a season. It could be looking at massive amounts of weather information during hurricane season.
It can be expensive to physically purchase servers and requisition the hours for a systems administrator to set it up. The value proposition behind Amazon is to have that kind of service “sitting in the wings” and it can be deployed when needed.
During the interview, Ryland highlights not only products like Amazon Red Shift but also new developments in encrypted email.
The conversation includes an overview of some of the new Amazon Web Services that the GSA is providing. These include cloud hosting, managed services, development, and well as security.
