A northern Virginia woman says she was asked to leave a church for breastfeeding her 1-year-old daughter
SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) — A northern Virginia woman says she was asked to leave a church for breastfeeding her 1-year-old daughter.
Women in Virginia are allowed to breastfeed anywhere they have a legal right to be, thanks to a law passed in 2015.
Annie Peguero said in a video posted on Facebook that she was asked to leave the sanctuary of Summit Church in Springfield. With the help of a lawyer, she is pressing the church to issue a statement and reverse its policy.
Church officials did not respond to requests for comment from local media outlets.
Peguero says she was asked to go to a private room when she started breastfeeding. She says she was then told the church doesn’t allow breastfeeding without a cover because it could make fellow churchgoers “uncomfortable.”
