Obama to nominate new OMB deputy director for management

President Barack Obama plans to nominate Andrew Mayock as the next deputy director of management at the Office of Management and Budget.

The White House announced the President’s plans to promote Mayock Dec. 10.

Mayock already works at OMB as a senior adviser in the Office of the Director. He joined the director’s office in November and has worked at OMB since 2013 where he was the associate director for General Government Programs.

If confirmed by the Senate, Mayock would replace Beth Cobert, who was nominated in November to be the permanent director of the Office of Personnel Management. Cobert has been acting OPM director since July when former director Katherine Archuleta resigned.

Mayock would be OMB’s third permanent DDM in the last eight years. Cobert served in that role for about 21 months. Before her, OMB had several acting DDMs and Jeff Zients served in that role for about four years before resigning in May 2013.

“The President’s intent to nominate Andrew Mayock to be Deputy Director for Management, Office of Management and Budget is welcome news,” said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), ranking member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, in a statement to Federal News Radio. “Mr. Mayock brings experience from both the public and private sector, and I am eager to meet with him and discuss his vision for the Office of Management and Budget. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the committee to consider his nomination in a thorough and timely manner.”

Before coming to OMB, Mayock was the deputy vice president for compact implementation at the Millennium Challenge Corporation from 2010 to 2013, and from 2009 to 2010, he served as the executive secretary at the Department of Treasury.

Mayock also served during the administration of President Bill Clinton first as special assistant to the deputy chief of staff and then senior adviser to the director of public liaison. He also was a special assistant to the chief of staff at the Department of the Treasury from 1995 to 1996.

During the mid-2000s, Mayock worked as a senior associate for Booz Allen Hamilton.
