IDG says hackers can eavesdrop on GSM phone conversations
Cybersecurity Update If you use a GSM mobile phone, a determined hacker could listen in on your conversations. The Global System for Mobile Communications is the most common type of phone. Computer security researchers say such phones can be compromised with some free open-source software tools and the right hardware. IDG reports that the weakness in GSM phones is their encryption algorithm. It’s 20 years old, and easy to crack. Microsoft is pondering an emergency patch for a new vulnerability found in its Internet Information Services product. A Canadian researcher discovered a flaw that an attacker could use to upload malicious code on a Web server. It was reported in a blog at the SANS Institute. A Microsoft spokesman says the flaw is only dangerous if the Web server is put in a non-default, unsafe configuration.
