DHS reasserts cybersecurity responsibility

Cybersecurity should be the responsibility of Homeland Security not the military. That’s according to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. Speaking at a GovExec forum, Napolitano says it’s a mistake to look at the cybersecurity challenge as a war. She adds, the DHS mandate to protect critical infrastructure also gives the department a degree of authority over networks in the private sector. Still, Napolitano acknowledges, no department or agency can do it alone. She cited last summer’s agreement with Defense Secretary Robert Gates to share people and technology between the departments.
