Pay freezes haven’t stopped some federal workers and their colleagues from giving money to good causes.
The Combined Federal Campaign is in full swing and federal employees in the capital area have shelled out more than $27 million, so far.
John Lazar, executive director for the CFC of the National Capital Area, spoke to the Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris on Tuesday.
“We are ahead of where we were this time last year,” Lazar said. The CFCNCA has received $27 million so far on the way toward its $67.2 million goal for 2011.
Helping out CFCNCA’s fundraising efforts is the Office of Personnel Management’s recent announcement that the campaign has been extended through Dec. 31.
“Usually, the campaign closes on Dec. 15, but I really believe that the OPM realizes that the need out there, especially this year, is greater than ever,” Lazar said. “So we’re giving our federal employees an extra grace period to the end of December to be able to give and make their pledges.”
Federal workers can contribute through payroll deductions, online or by credit or check.
“The CFCNCA is the only solicitation for charitable organizations created and run by federal employees,” Lazar said. “This is their campaign. It’s success rests with 350,000 uniformed, civilian and postal employees, and now they have till Dec. 31 to make their pledge.”
