Updated: DC federal offices open; New York feds on unscheduled leave, telework

Updated on Feb. 8, 2013, at 12 p.m., with information about early closings at Social Security Administration offices.

As a huge winter storm descends on the Northeast, federal offices along the Eastern Seaboard are beginning to make decisions about their operating statuses for today.

According to the Office of Personnel Management website, offices in the Washington, D.C., area are open. Employees are expected to report to their offices or begin teleworking on time.

The New York City Federal Executive Board is recommending an unscheduled leave policy this morning, with each agency following its existing telework policy. This is a non-binding advisory. Each agency head should determine the status of his or her office and communicate that to their employees.

A spokeswoman for the Greater Boston Federal Executive Board said in an email to Federal News Radio that federal offices in her area are open for business as usual with unscheduled leave and telework options.

An OPM spokesman said that federal offices in Philadelphia and Baltimore are currently open.

Social Security Administration offices in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island have also announced reduced hours Friday. View the full list.
