GAO says the average Military Sealift Command ship is 40-years old, and the Navy has no long-term plan to replace them.
The Navy has serious concerns about the readiness of its fleet of combat vessels, partly because of years of backlogged maintenance. But there’s been comparatively less attention paid to the civilian-crewed ships operated by Military Sealift Command. The sealift and combat logistics fleet is vital to military operations around the world, and according to the Government Accountability Office, the average ship is 40-years old, and the Navy has no long-term plan to replace them. John Pendleton, director of Defense capability and management issues at GAO, joined Jared Serbu on Federal Drive with Tom Temin to talk about the office’s concerns.
